27th November 2019
How time flies – in November we brought our Meeting Point Midlands participants together for their last pre-commission workshop&go/see in West Yorkshire.
Day one was spent in wholly unexpected sunshine at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. We sent our museum staff in self-guided pairs to explore the park, and brought them back together in the Bothy Gallery to discuss what they’d seen; what they liked, what impressed them, what they weren’t too sure about. Then we were kindly joined by members of YSP’s curatorial, learning, retail and voluntary team, to ask questions about the selection of artists and art works, the retail offer and the importance of engaging volunteers. Lastly, previous Meeting Point participant Chris Keady, Interim Museum Manager of Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust, gave a fantastic presentation about their journey through Meeting Point, which will culminate in January 2020 with the launch of artist Mel Brimfield’s work at Kelham Island Museum.
We spent our second day talking all things Audiences at The Hepworth. Members of the A&H team led discussions and presentations on internal communications, extra marketing activity and marketing, and Olivia Colling, the Hepworth’s Director of Communications and Development, joined us for an inspiring talk on collaborative projects, focused on Yorkshire Sculpture International.
Now our Meeting Point Midlands participants will be developing their Artist Briefs with A&H’s guidance, and starting to think about how best to pitch their museums, sites and collections to a roomful of artists in January!
